Default tranny or t.c. or t.case?

I was towing my backhoe and pulling onto the freeway when I got a loud bang and now the truck won't go in any gear. Drive shafts and u-joints are good. Tried 4 wheel drive and still nothing. O.D. light is not flashing, and there is no fluid or damage evident on the outside. Anyone care to speculate as to what the problem might be and what it might cost to fix? I realize I'll need to tear into it to diagnose it 100%, but any speculation may help me plan and/or hope until then. Thanks.

Sounds like you might have broke a shaft in the trans.

sounds like transmission. drain a little bit of the ATF and see if there is any metal particles. and do the same with the t- case.

I slowly worked my way up from an idle to about 2k rpm and have discovered that I can slip the tranny from reverse (or drive) into park while holding said rpm. There is zero noticable change. No vibration or clunk or strange noises. If a passenger sat next to me with his eyes closed, he would not be able to tell if or when I moved the shifter.

Would this indicate that it must be the torque vonverter?...the first thing in the driveline after the engine? Could the torque converter failing be the sourse of the loud bang when it blew?

Its not the TC...

No reason to speculate. Pull the tranny and tear it down. Its the trans.

I've only broken 7 of them...

The transmission was built by Goerend Transmission seven years ago. I just rolled 102 k miles on a 100K warranty! They build there own torque converters in house with a lifetime warranty. That is why I was really hoping it was the converter. I decided to bring it back to Goerend's since they built it in the first place. They now specialize exclusively in Dodge transmissions. They cut the converter open to check that and said it looked like brand new. Because it has a lifetime warranty, they offered to rebuild it and suggested I sell it with their blessing and warranty! I decided to go with a heavy duty rebuilt transmission from Fort Dodge Transmission. The new transmission comes with a heavy duty T.C. and only offered a $150 discount without it. I will keep the new transmission and T.C. together and sell the Goerend T.C (with lifetime warranty)... probably on E-bay. I now need to come up with a core for the new T.C.
