Ford/Navistar how much longer
how much longer is navistar going to sell the 6.4 to ford? i beleive that they are in court over it right now, i think the best move for ford now if they loose the 6.4 would be to go to a volvo penta diesel, volvo is already part of ford so it would basically be an in house diesel for ford. volvo has a 5.5 liter I6 that is putting out 300hp and 650tq which is pretty impressive for the size, i think that a volvo diesel in the superduty would make it one hell of a truck, also volvo penta has a great reputation in the marine and heavy duty diesel world. what do you guys think about this
They were in court over a breach of contract debate but the judge ordered Nav to continue to deliver the 6.4 to ford as per their contract.
Navistar doesn't want to loose Ford but they have to learn to play nicer in the sandbox.
I would like to see Ford turn to a different powerplant like the Volvo engine that you mentioned maybe - don't know much about them but a change would be good.

It is simply a part of horbile timing, a part bad press and a part of consumer confidence that will spell the end of that. It looks to me (opinion, not fact) that the blue oval would need to look to Volvo for that as CAT is in bed with Toyota (based on sponsorship and articles in the news etc.) - Even though CAT doesn't have a small enough motor that would do that truck justice. I would hope they wouldn't build their own as that might back fire like the GMC 5.7 thinggy some years back.
I agree.....ford also has some new issues with their 6.4...seams its shooting fire out the tailpipe..recaall in progress
ford cant stand much more of this stuff..........it would be a very sad day if Ford were to go under

i haven't followed this whole thing completely but from wut i understand ford in a way sealed it's own fate. navistar/international told them that the 6.0 couldn't dependably make the power numbers that ford wanted the engine to. ford pressed on in order to compete with gm and dodge. same thing happened with the 6.4. that's wut i've heard. my calls to ford and N/I have gone unreturned.
feel free to correct me if i'm wrong here ppl.
but ford and N/I each have way too much money invested in the 6.4 to quit. they both need each other equally. this motor has to be a success and i think they'll eventually get it there. today's car manufacturers all rush things to market in order to get a leg up on the competition. toyota was the first to start doing this. i'm not convinced this is a great idea as evidenced by toyota's mass amount of recalls last year, ford's bumpy start to the 6.4 and gm's rough start with the new fullsize utility line. it's a cut throat business. maybe we'd have better stuff to drive if they'd stop trying to eat each other's piece of pie.

Even if the 6.4 turns out to be a good reliable engine there are going to be regular maintence and breakdowns.. All trucks have them.. Who in their right mind wants to own a truck after warranty that has to have the cab removed from the frame to change an injector???
even under warranty removing the cab will probably cause lots of rattles and creeks in the cab..
I can see the after warranty every bill for labor R&R cab $1500.00 Sensor replacement labor $50.00 sensor $500.00

The real story on these two is that they are just a couple of buddies fighting over the last beer. Ford and Navistar signed another 15 year contract earlier this spring. Ford could make it without Navistar but no way in hell could Navistar make it without Ford. Right now there have been no problems with the 6.4 other then a reflash. No they werent all shooting flames out of the exhaust that was an isolated case that had potential of happening and they took care of it. As for the lifting of the cab. It was designed to lift so everything has quick connects and easy access bolts. A good tech can have one up in less then 45 mins. For those of you that dont know anything about 6.0's, try to get to what your needing to work on in less then 45 mins then stand back and say, damn it would have been easier to lift the cab!
