Default beginner mods for a 2007 5.9L

I am new to the site and new to diesels. Just bought a 2007 Dodge 5.9 with a manual tranny. I want to increase fuel economy as well as HP but I am currently not interested in programmers. Heard too many horrer stories about repair issues down the road. Also not currently interested in larger injectors or other heavy fuel system mods. On the other hand if I am mislead I am willing to learn.

I plan to haul a boat and gooseneck trailer but nothing super heavy. The stock motor is beyond sufficient for my needs but increased MPGs is always nice. Usually whatever increases MPGs also gives a couple extra ponies, and no objection there either. However, I am not looking to gain 200hp and 300ft. lbs. I just want a quailty sound exhaust with good flow and maybe a cold breathing intake. The intake and exhaust are all I am looking at working with for now.

Banks seems to have a nice line of products... pricey but nice. I am considering their monster 4" turbo back and the ram air box with the scoop. Any thoughts or comments from owners of these products or just anyone's 2 cents worth on Banks.

Thanks a lot.

the banks stuff is nice but very pricey i run mbrp exhaust and afe intakes on my personal trucks, you might also look into the blade runner intake manifold and the afe stainless exhaust manifold to complety free up the air

I have a 2006 3500 Megacab 5.9L automatic w/74,000 mi. I put a Bank's Ram Air intake w/Super Scoop & 4" cat-back Monster exhaust on it. City mpg jumped from 18 to 21.5-22 and hwy mpg jumped from 22 to 28.9 (65mph w/cruise control). The Ram Air intake & Scoop has made the spooling of the turbo much more pronounced. Also feels like it got me a few more HP and the Monster exhaust sounds great. It seems there are a lot of companies w/aftermarket upgrades but Banks seems to be the only one I have found that posts improvement data based on bench testing. They also compare their results to the results they found w/the competitors products. Yes, they are more expensive than some of the others but when my hwy mph jumped from 22 to almost 29 I figured it would pay for itself in the long run. Hope this helps in the decision process.

Is that mpg on your overhead lie-o-meter or hand calculated?

Thanks for the info everyone. After your input and more research, it seems the Banks ram air with scoop is the best cold air intake. However, AFE manifolds and intercooler seem to be very comparable to the more pricey Banks models. Still deciding who has the best 5" tbe. Can't go straight pipe since I will be subject to vehicle inspections for my job. Gotta play by the rules and have a kitty and muffler. Any suggestions are welcome.

mbrp S6116409 is a stainless 5" turbo back with muffler but it deletes the kitty and does not come with a tip, but you can add a 5" in 6" out 18" long tip for just a little more

if i can help you with any of the parts mentioned just let me know

I have similar plans for my truck, but will run a programmer. I don't favor the Banks or AFE systems. I prefer S&B.

Here's what I'm doing. (Replacing what I have currently on my truck.)
