Fuel gauge is probably lying to you, and it ran out of diesel. Only one way to find out is switch tanks or fill the passenger side (23 gal capacity). To boot, fastest way of priming is after you got at least half a tank is use shop air to re-prime the system don't go more than 10 lbs.
Is there a square filter on the firewall or is there a round one?
One more thing you can check, on top of the engine toward the front, there will be two diff colored wires (single red, and a double green). Turn the key on, then make sure both got power. If the red wire does, but the green one doesn't, run a jumper to it (make sure to listen for a click). That terminal is for the return line solenoid. If it doesn't work, the engine will not run good, or at all.

thank you. yeah it had a full tank, the fuel filter is round on the firewall there is also a smaller one on the back of the block, and yeah i can hear the clicking from the solenoide, but i had the injector pump rebuilt because it had a fuel leak, i guy i got working on it now says the intake manifold and headers are chevy but the bottom of the engine is a cat motor but he is thinking it might be the starter it was cranking slow
Air leak in a fuel line. Check to make sure the fuel pump is working. Then Check all the fuel lines running from the tank to the injection pump for crack or bad places. It may not leak fuel but it most likely sucking air some where.
