Default 1994 ford f250 7.3 idi turbo diesel problem

Hello, i have just obtained a 1994 f250 7.3l idi turbo diesel, and when i got it the former owner wasnt running an air filter on it because he was "going to build an intake but never got around to it" the tirbo is very dirty, but still functions. when cold started it will idle Very rough or die, while putting out some white smoke then fading into a blue tint smoke. when it warmsup a little it misses a little, but when drivin down the road it seems fine. anyone have any ideas that could help me fix the problem? io live in new england and would like to get things situated before winter. thanks!!!!

The smoke issue sounds like the turbo might very well be fried (or dusted) from running no intake.

but the way it does it at startup and cold make me think it isnt. screwed up turbo wont cause a miss at idle.

any play in the turbo?

i had a buddy of mine come over and take a look and the turbo seems still great, just a little dirty. were thinking it could use a new fuel filter/waterseperator and a fresh set of glow plugs. we are also going to make a custom intake.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

we checked the turbo and it has 0 play, we are just going to give it a good cleaning

only use IH, motorcraft or Buer glow plugs. buer makes them for motorcraft.

It can appear to make a miss though. When I fried a turbo in my diesel volkswagen (bearings were shot, seals also) the turbo would kinda skip around as it wasn't flowing fluidly on the bearings, and it SEEMED like the car was missing on startup.

The OP just said his turbo was pretty dirty, so I'd be curious to know if the motor might be dusted too
