6.9 Injector Pump Swap
I was wondering how hard it is to swap out the IP on a 6.9L? How much do you need to know to do it or is it pretty simple? I have a 86 F-250 that is my only vehicle and up until a week ago i was still driving it even tho it had IP problems. But then it started completely shutting off while i was driving so I'm looking at a expensive mechanic bill unless i can do it myself. I know the big issue would be the timing so i didnt know if that was something that i needed a mechanic for.

ok swapping out pump is not hard just more time consuming than anything.....
start by removing batteries.... put them on charger..you'll need them to be charged
start by putting numbers on all the injector lines .... i use green masking tape and a paint pen....dont use a sharpie...will rub off .... put tape on and write number on adhesive side.... then fold over so it shows through...wont rub off
pull the two bolts out of front gear cover and crack the big nut loose
then pull the bolts out of the gear cover... think there's 4
drain all the oil
loosen all the oil pan bolts in front of the oil pan to the rear of the block
will allow you to pull the cover off and time the pump for the install
remove pump from the engine.... pull timing cover...( will need water pump and all)
once cover is rempved turn engine till marks all line up
use paint pen to mark the top of the gear ( clean off with brake cleaner )
paint center of the gear tooth with dot in center.... you will also need to look at timing cover to refrence top dead center
then look at pump.... and there will be two dot's one is TDC... the other is 180 out..
not sure how to tell until installed.... will have to ask some one on that one
i usually pull the entire oil pan off and re-seal.... just dont get in a hurry .... take time now or suffer leaks later...... good luck.... let me know if you want me to come and do it for ya...i travel and do mechanics occasionally........

VERY LONG WAY.
no need to remove all the timing covers. just undoing the 3 9/16ths bolts holding the pump to the cover and the 3 5/16th 12 points holding the gear to the pump and it will come out. the gear can not jump a tooth with the housing still on. i can swap a pump out and time it correctly with my tach n time in around 1.5-2 hrs.

Diesel Crawler: The IP on my truck just started to go out. Heatsoaked pour cool water and starts. I'm ordering a pump tomorrow and I know I can change the pump but timinig is another thing. Could you give a run down on how to time with the tach, and maybe some pointers. Any help would be great.
you need to get either a timing meter or someone who has one. when i said tach n time it is what my timing meter is called.
OTC , J33300-A Tach-N-Timer Diesel Timing Meter (Base Unit)
do a search in your area for diesel repair shops. call them up and ask if they time injection pumps by meter or by ear. if you line up the lines on the top of the pump it will run, just not great.
a problerly timed idi engine WILL sound like a powerstroke when it is cold.
