Lookin to build my tranny for 600-650 HP and was wondering what would be a cheaper way to go, with a manual tranny or building my auto? Putting the 5 speed in won't be a problem so that doesn't matter to me, just wondering what would be a good 5 speed tranny and how much southbend clutches run. All in all just lookin to compare prices to building an auto or just flat out yank it out and put a 5 speed in. Plus i do miss my old 5 speed pick up.

 

nv4500 id assume , id use a built auto before that trans, if your going to stick swap then id get a g56 or nv5600

 

well i have the stock auto tranny in it now, so would just building it be the best way to go?

 

What are your goals for the truck other than horsepower wise? Do you wanna drag,pull, or it's just a play truck/daily driver

 

just a play truck/daily driver, but i would like to perform on the strip and still be able to hook it up at the fair for some pulls but nothing more. overall a balance of each

 

I don't know much about built autos and I'm kinda partial to manuals so I would choose a nv5600 with a sb dd. I wouldn't choose the nv4500 it's a decent trans but has several flaws. And the g56 is a good choice but I'm not sure it can hold up to the power your looking at reliably. But cost wise a mild built auto and a manual conversion will cost about the same

 

i have done a lot of research because i have been looking into buying an automatic but after reading alot of reviews it has been pointed out to me that your best bet is to get a manual. the only thing you will have to replace will be the clutch and for a South Bend Dyna Max Double Disc Clutch (Incl. Flywheel) will cost you around $1,600 but for a transmission that you can throw anything at, you would have to get an ATS stage 4 for the cost of $5,900 but it also comes with a 5yr 500,000 mile warranty. so it just depends on how much you want to spend.

 

You can build a really good auto for a reasonable price and it will perform better imho.

 

both have pros and cons , i swapped to manual because i was sick of wasting money to fix my trans and sick of my bad fuel mileage

 

i got a auto in my 97 1 ton. i sled pull about 20 times in the summer. a built auto is hard to beat sled pulling at your power range. i have over 30 hooks on a fresh overhaul. i have a vannest built tranny.
