Default Brakes - I need 'em!

Had a really close call today. I always keep my distance and drive carefully, but this little car in front of me locked up from about 50 mph to make a turn where you aren't supposed to turn. I came inches from redecorating their back side. Scared the hell out of my wife and kids ... and maybe a me just a little bit too.

I want this thing to stop, and stop well. I have seen the $3000.00 Stillen kit for sale, but no one talking about it. No reviews for the Ex that I could find anywhere. I don't like the idea of dumping that kind of cash if it isn't worth it.

I've also heard of people saying to use steel braided brake line, slotted / vented rotors with aggressive pads. Some say to just replace them with stock, it's just a heavy truck and we should live with it.


Any one have any recommendations?

I've got a 3600+ mile road trip starting at the end of this month and it's going to be in the X. I'm towing my 2002 F150 Supercrew from Houston to Southern California to deliver it to my father in law, visiting for two weeks, and then returning to Houston.

With the time crunch, I don't think I can do any extreme brake upgrades right now. I don't think I have any choice but to go with slotted rotors, upgraded and aggressive pads and if I can find them, steel braided lines. I'm going to go talk to a local mechanic who I've done some work for in the past. I scratched his back when he needed it, and maybe I can get him to scratch mine now.

You should get some good feel from the braided lines, instant pedal, the slotted rotors and aggressive pads ought to make a huge difference, just a note, when i am in heavy traffic I use the tow mode on the trans, it really helps braking even without a load. Wouldn't brakes off a f250 be the same as the Ex. ? make sure you clean the callipers real good with brake clean, I buy it by the case, use a parts cleaning brush also, lube the slides good also with some high temp grease.. Also a set of TRAIN HORNS for when thos idiots pull stunts like that,LOL they will poop themselves. LOL

I worked up the courage to place an order online for braided stainless steel lines, EBC pads, and EBC slotted rottors - just under $900.00 for the lot. I click the go button and... nothing. The site errors out and tells me there is a problem proccessing my order and to call it in Monday - Friday between the hours of 8 and 5pm.

I hope I can get this stuff in before my trip. I may not be able to do it myself now depending on how long it takes to get the goods. I'm wondering if I should take my truck out into a private parking lot and do some before and after testing with varied speeds and measured distances... what do you guys think?

I haven't used them, but have seen the calipers in hand and they are dead sexy... SSBC :: SSBC Performance Brake Systems

They sell everything too.

I've heard good things about EBC and Hawk pads for our trucks, more towards Hawk (just a lot of guys using them).

I don't think going to a big brake kit is going to hurt you at all....
