When and how often do you guys put it in tow haul mode? Just when your coming to a big hill? Do you leave it in tow haul when you have a load? Is it hard on the tranny or motor to leave it in for a long period of time? I dont really use mine but some people use it religiously. Whata you guys think?

 

i never used mine, plus it doesn't work past like 60 if i recall correctly? if i was goin slow enough i'd just shift it myself, if not then i'd just let it do its own thing to maintain its speed, and as far as hurting anything no, all it does is keep it in the same gear for longer, i never had any issues, average weight i had to haul was around 14k give or take

 

You should read up on Tow/haul a little more. It does a bit more than just stay in gear longer. You get firmer shifts from increased line pressure, better TC lockup, ect.

 

never noticed better converter lock, i will have to check into it a little deeper though

 

normally the converter will lock in highway speeds to improve fuel efficiency with a true 1:1 ratio so full engine power gets though the transmission.

on the dmaxes when you put in t/h mode the convertor will begin to lock up in 2nd gear, so all your torque is used, and raises the shift points under normal driving conditions to reduce the load

 

It's there for a reason. Todays automatics are much smarter then you and I. Tow Haul mode with teh shifter in D will make sure you tranny performs to the best ability it can while towing.

 

Ok good info so you think its best to leave it in tow haul the whole time your hauling something? Or maybe just when you aproach a hill or steap incline.

 

I leave mine in tow/haul whenever I'm hooked up... It raises line pressure and adjusts shift points. It also keeps the t/c locked more often. Heck, I sometimes use it on hilly switchbacks when unloaded!

 

I believe it needs to be locked under any decent load, wether its a boat, car trailer, hauling tractors, basically anything of any kind of weight. Like RS said these trans are much smarter than the average joe behind the wheel.

 

I used mine on a trip from texas to south dakota pulling a 16ft carge trailer. tow haul mode worked great up and down those mountains. seemed to make a big differance when going down a steep grade.
