Default Glow Plugs

Can anyone tell me the proper way of testing the glow plug system on a 1994 IDI stock turbo truck? I turn the key on to let them cycle and the WTS light comes on, the relay clicks a few times causing my volt meter in the truck to jump back and forth but the truck is still hard to start and smokes white for quite a while until the truck gets warmed up.

I use a test light, one end on the positive of the battery and touch the other to each glow plug if she lights up strong shes good, if it doesnt the gp is hooped, there is a way with an ohm meter but what the exact readings are is beyond me

I forgot to mention this truck has 8 new motorcraft glow plugs in it.... replaced them all thinking this would fix the problem. I do however have the coating melted off the wire going to the glow plug under the turbo but not bad wire (put electrical tape around it to try the glow plugs again in case it was grounding out but didnt change anything)

I would throw a test light on them any way, just in case. Bad new parts aren't uncommon and one bad plug can throw the system off.

I just got a hold of a couple good items. I have the International test and troubleshooting paper for the glow plug system and the tech manual for the db2 injection pump. PM me if you are interested in them and I can for sure get the tech manual to you and I will get the troubleshooting guide scanned in soon to be able to send.

I bought a manual glow plug controller off of e-bay. It was really simple to install. It is simply a toggle switch that you mount inside the cab and a heavy duty relay that replaces your stock glow plug relay. Then you simply wire everything up and it allows you to warm up your glow plugs to the amount needed. I sometimes flip the switch for 20 to 30 seconds and she fires right off.

if you are running the stock glowplugs, 20-30 seconds is way to long. 10-15 seconds max.
