6.5 questions
So i wasn't planning on getting a new truck soon but some things happened and i got my wife a new car so now i get to take her other one and trade it off. I've been looking around and i found this pretty sweet chevy ext cab 1 ton dually 4x4. Its a good looking truck from the pics but i havent seen it in person yet(by the way it has 252,971 miles). My questions are- What are some things that i should look for when checking it out? Would these miles be a problem? I mean i know diesels run forever but is there anything i should look for at this mileage, or how many miles can you expect out of a 6.5? I"ts also an automatic and that kinda makes me leery about the truck. I know nothing about auto's, i've never owned an auto truck (all manuals for this guy), have there been problems with these trans.'s or are they mostly good to go? Basically if someone could give me a rundown on these trucks kinda let me know problems/things to look for. I appreciate any replies Thanks
Also: If anybody is looking for a good car and have a diesel they wanna get rid of the car is a 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix 4dr SE it has 140,000 miles, new tires and trans. serviced NOV 09, White with gray interior, automatic, a/c, power windows/ locks, Valvoline oil (every 3000), runs excelent. Took a 2000 mile round trip NOV 09 from southern indiana to west texas and back and had absolutely no problems. Its a great car and if i wasn't a truck man i would keep it, but i would rather have a diesel. Im not looking for anything special 3/4 or 1 ton, 4x4, would like a manual trans., ext or standard cab, no rust, doesn't even have to be a 6.5 or 6.2, i would take a 7.3 psd or 5.9 cummins(manual) thanks for any replies on the above questions or if u wanna trade let me know

What year is the truck?
when you get to go look at it ask to start the truck cold and make sure it is. check to see what color smoke comes out of the tailpipe and how easy it is to start. open the the oil cap and see how much blowby it has. listen to the truck and see if it has any wierd noises or ticking noises besides the rattle. when you start it up see if rad hoses get hard and what the coolant level is. check oil dipstick for the color and smell.
if it has efi note where the pmd is located. to check the tranny, drive around a bit and see how it shifts. take out the tranny dipstick and see what color it is and what it smells like. if it is a 94 and up truck it has a 4l80e which is a good tranny but at 250K miles who knows what type of abuse it has.
check carfax to see whats its history it has had and what has been replaced. with 250k miles its up there as terms as its life especially if it has been worked hard which is a strong possiblity since its a dually. if your not getting it for dirt cheap i would pass unless its drivetrain is recently rebuilt or replaced.

thanks for the info guys and by the way its a 94 and the price is $4995 but i was gonna try to jew down from that. Something i forgot to say earlier, i've heard that the 6.2/6.5 had problems with crankshafts breaking but only from the balancer being bad is this true, if i was to buy it would it be smart to just put a new balancer on right away. its at a dealer so should they let me check the turbo like that and mess with it as long as i need to to figure out if its for me (i guess they should if im gonna buy it). I've seen people with extreme confidence in these motors so the mileage on the motor doesn't bother me as bad as the trans. I just don't know about them i guess. I just need to go check it out i guess. If everything goes well and its a decent truck and later down the road the trans. poops out would a 4spd. granny low with a 205t-case fit in that truck or would i have to get new shafts or what kinda problem would it be to make that swap?

5k is kinda high for this vehicle unless its SUPER clean. i picked up my truck for close to that price and it was very clean with only a little bit of rust on one of the quarter panels and it only had 142K miles. i would suggest new injectors and balancer if you get this truck so your getting even power pulses and the crank doesnt move around too much. swapping in a manual will require you getting a new chip im pretty sure so the truck doenst look for the sensors for the auto tranny.
