purchasing a 5er soon
I need advice on what type of a hitch to buy. I like the b&w turnover ball hitch and saw the adapter that replaces the king pin on the 5er with a goose neck hitch. My main question is what does the 5wheel style hitch give you that the goose nick style cant? It seem like they both do the same thing. Comments welcome.
the 5th wheel hitch is very easy on the trailer and the goos neck adaptor add length to the trailer and may cause extra flex, I have seen some trailers have way to much flex with the added length, I had one myself so I added some extra channel iorn to the trailer mainframe above the hitch to firm it up. I much prefer the goosneck over the 5th wheel as you get much more movement between the truck and trailer for navigating ditches and such, also the goosneck hitch its easy to remove the ball or do the flipover type so one can load plywood or the likes, the 5th wheel hitch ya can do the same but the whole 5th table needs removed and then ya still have two railes that it pined to sticking up...........my goosneck ball is removable and its great it called the Cody Hitch
If you plan on buying a new fifth wheel check with the manufacturer about if putting a gooseneck adapter on will void the warranty. Most of them today will not warranty the trailer if you do due to the flexing as stated above. Also with the fifth wheel hitch installed people are allowed to travel in the trailer in most states but not with the gooseneck or bumper hitch. I have a fifth wheel and love it and I also have friends with gooseneck adapters and they love those as well. For models I have a Husky which fits under my soft cover with no trailer and my dad has a reese that he likes. Just remeber when getting what ever to add 20% to your gross trailer weight rating for the hitch rating in fifth wheel and gooseneck mounts.
If money isnt an issue B&W makes a 5th wheel hitch that sits into their gooseneck hitch, called the Companion. I had both and prefer gooseneck. What it came down to is my 26' trailer's pin box extended out in front of trailer. It was also only 8500 lbs. The bigger trailers have the pin box under the trailer and nobody will sell you a gooseneck adapter for them.
Also, another consideration is the B&W turnover hitches sits like 5 inches forward of the axle centerline which may cause problems if you have a shortbed. Both my 5ers sat just barely fwd of axle centerline.
I had a Mega-cab Dodge with my trailer and didnt need slider cause pin was at forward part of trailer. Mega cab had 5er and my 95 Ford F-350 long and short beds have B&W. Research this as much as you can so you dont damage truck like I did!
