03 duramax check engine light emission control

i got a check engine light for emission control code wondering what i should check? truck is stock. would this include vacuum leaks or anything in that order? maybe an EGR type valve?

Check the codes to see what general direction to go in. There are hundreds of codes, there is no sence in guessing until you know what code it is.
