hello everyone about three weeks ago i bought a 96 PSD extended cab long bed with 150k on it and has had the trans rebuilt about 7 months ago from my brother in law for 5 grand, its auto and it shifts really wierd and really hard...the truck is stock other than the exhaust i just put on it, it changes gear way to early sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. when the truck is cold and with decent throttle it shifts smooth.sometimes when in 2nd gear and shifting to 3rd the rpms drop about 400 and then it shifts. my overdrive light works fine...can anyone help me out and tell me whats wrong with it if anything as i'm new to powerstrokes only have had a 6.9 idi and have a 12 valve. thanks to all that reply.

 

anyone have an idea? any things i can check that would make it shift wierd?

 

do you have any engine codes? speedo working? i took mine to ford and they said it was a p0500 code,(speed sensor) but i changed it and it still does it. havent had time or cash to dig in deeper into it because the turbo went out. hope you find the problem. if you do let me know. check the wiring to the vss the vss is located on top of the rear def. i was told to take the connector off and shoot wd40 into it but i replaced the sensor(25$) at ford

 

Check engine light isn't on but haven't gotten it hooked up yet, yes speedo works fine....maybe i'll take it down and see or maybe just try what u suggested and hope it works. i'll let u know what i figure out, any other thoughts are still welcome haha

 

my engine light was not on either my od light was flashing on the shifter though

 

My od light doesn't flash at all ever wich its on most of the time because it bucks really hard when it shifts from 3rd to 4th. and i don't like how rough it does it so i don't use od around town

 

could just be a nice firm torque convertor locking in i have a heavy duty one and it does tht some times if i do a burn out or something and chop the throttle real hard at the ende it will asctually stall the motor

 

Hmm ok I figured I would get some input as I'm new to powerstrokes....and I got such a good deal I couldn't say no and I'm glad I didn't because I love this truck...thanks for the input man

 

try replacing the mlps. switch. (shifter shaft switch) these switches can cause many driveability issues without setting any codes...

 

Ok the weird thing is I was pulling a car hauler with a 66 chevelle in it tonight and the truck shifts normal none of the weird stuff it's been doing....it still shifts hard which is fine with me but I found it kinda weird that it shifts normal while hauling a good amount of weight....now I'm even more confused but I have to say I'm impressed with how well the truck did for being stock my chip will be here tomorrow
