or is there a cheaper/better way I was thinking the 10HP inverter because I have a large 4hp 3 phase compressor and looking at a 3 phase lathe

I would look a phase converting VFD like the Toshiba VF series. These take up a lot less shop space and have become very reliable. We use drives like these on our single phase compressor locations to power instrument air compressor and glycol pumps both of which are very important to the process so reliable must be used. As well they should be price comparable.

 

Be using A LOT of power to run it. Then again, having 3 phase wired into your shop won't be cheap either.

 

If you're going to start upgrading your shop with a lot of these machines, your best bet would be to look into getting 3 phase service ran to your shop.

Constantly buying and hooking up converters every time you get a new machine and exceed the rating of your current converter would probably equal up the start up cost of getting 3 phase service.

 

hmmm dont know what it will cost me to have it hooked up but I am sure it will cost me a leg, arm, and first born

 

If I was you I'd give my utility company a call Monday and just see what it would cost.. might be easier to plan that way if you know the cost of both options.

Three phase is amazing... as well as complex to wrap your head around sometimes...

Depending on where your shop is.. upgrading shouldn't cost too much more then a converter from what I've read.

 

If your shop is in or near a commercial or industrial zone, 3 phase should be next to ya. Otherwise, it's gonna cost.

 

Even if he's not in a commercial or industrial zone... all it takes is a transformer bank and one more wire ran into the building.

Depends on how they do it... he can either get a 240Y/139 service.. 208Y/120 service.. or 240/120 high leg delta
