I have not bought a diesel truck yet but about too, what is the best diesel truck on the market, ford, gm, dodge i know that dodge has the best engine but heard that the trans is not very good, i will be pulling my 5th wheel camper with this truck, it weigh's about 10,000 lbs, i need help to find the best truck that will last a long time

 

If you don't mind shifting I would say a Cummins with a stick, otherwise an automatic can be built to last, it's just a matter of not being cheap when the time comes. Chevy has yet to prove to me they can build a reliable diesel, and after the 6.0 it'll be a while before I would trust a Ford either. Just my opinion

 

As far as pulling I have not had a problem with my Dmax. If want an auto the allison would be the way to go. Just my .02

 

my dad has an 03 cummins with an automatic behind it and we use it about every other weekend and pull a fifth wheel a little heavier than 10k i think its like 12.5k and knock on wood no trans issues yet. i have been tryin to tear the auto out of my 99 dodge for a few years now but it just keeps on ticking. IMO the dodge auto transmissions got a reputation they really dont deserve. also im sure someone on here will call this one out but if you wanted to go with a built automatic built for built the 47RE/48RE transmissions are tougher when built than a built allison. just my opinion of what i have read and seen with my own eyes.

Not Saying the allison is a bad trans or anything. honestly i would say the Ford 5R110 behind the 6.4 PSD is probably the toughest transmission from the factory

 

Yeah, the truth is Cummins owners bomb their trucks more often than Duramax and Powerstroke owners, so they have a higher rate of tranny failure. My '03 went 230k miles before i put a billet tranny in, and it still worked ok, but the tc was slipping. By the way, its in the for sale forum...........

 

Alright let's be realistic here. Asking which is the best truck is like asking how high is up? The answer depends on what you can afford and what you want. ALL of the big three make a good truck or they wouldn't be in business with them. ALL of them have their shortcomings. For anyone to say that one is better than the other is pretty much crap. If you are buying a used truck it would depend more on how it was used and how it was maintained then what the nameplate is. We all have our preferences in trucks. A truck is a tool. Get what you can afford and get the best set up for what you intend to do with it. Don't get hung up on looking for an endorsement from a forum as a way to buy a truck. Look at the history of the truck and get one designed to do the job you want it to do. Having a diesel is a great way to pull a trailer. If you are going to have to live with it for a few years you will want to get what you like and not worry much about what anyone else likes or doesn't like. There will be expenses and maintenance on all of them. Nuff said here....

The only thing wrong with Dodge trannys is stupid owners who can't be bothered to do the service on schedule, or ignore the trans while tuning the engine to double the power.

 

Tell 6.0 owners that they're all good trucks

 

Ken is 100% correct. The one that is best for you is the one that you like the best! My advice is to take your time and find your perfect truck. I love my Cummins (even with an auto) but I bought it too fast. I probably could have got a better truck for a better price... But it sure makes me happy every time I get behind the wheel!

i would say far away form ford diesel unless it was a 7.3l. the rest of ford diesel are made out of recycled beer cans.
