Me and a few friends are in constant need of towing stuff around, trucks, cars and such...

So we figured we should build our own trailer, here's my imaginary setup... is anyone here good with some sort of CAD software to help me design this ??

This is how i imagine my platform to be :P



I will be using a rear axle from a Chevrolet Step-Van (not sure wich GVW rating, but it has 10 lug nuts holding the wheels on the axle)

Now it can not exceed 240cm width, but it has to be able to carry a same size truck as mine (Extended Cab, Long Bed) truck.

Under the bed itself you would be able to find cabins for random stuff, such as straps and ties to tie down the cargo (whatever it be)..

Later upgrades i had planned throwing in a powered hydraulic pump for lowering and raising "feet" wich i could lower when storing the trailer, (much like on regular trailers you would find hanging in the back of a KW or Peterbilt truck)

Now comes the tricky part, with all this planning, can this be made to be a hitch mounted trailer and then later i would convert it to a 5th wheel or gooseneck.... or should i skip it straight to 5th wheel ???

There is BTW a seating for a 5th wheel on my truck, but no 5th wheel :P

 

why not use a regular trailer axle the width would not be wide enough using the truck axle

 

Be sure to use dual axles to cut down road sway. Single axle trailers are miserable to pull.

If you use a dual main beam design for the platform, at any later time you can cut the bumber pull hitch off and weld your 5th wheel neck to those beams
