Default timing Questions

my truck is getting the timing case fixed and i talked to my mechanic about bumping the timing and first i said to move it to 16 or 17 and he said that is not how you measure it he said stock is like 24 and he would move it up to 30. but he also said that since i haul stuff alot that turning up the timing would raiseing my timing would raise my egts alot when hauling. so what do yall think.

i think he dont know what he is talking about, look on the side of your timing case, it will tell you what it is stock. i believe mine is 12.5* stock. as for bumping it. 15 or 16 would be a good choice if you tow alot. unless you plan to stud the head and/or o ring it.
as for egts, i dont it will raise them at all, if any change, i think they should be lowered a tad.

30* for a DD is way to high you had the right idea with 16-17

go 16 or 17, you dont wana go higher than that without extra mods, especially for towing

Mine landed at between 17 and 18 shooting for mid 16. Cold starts are a bit harder, but not terrible. EGTs are noticeably down and dyno numbers speak for themselves with the mods I have done, I've been told the torque was all in the timing.
As for the way of "thinking of it", to be proper, you want 16* before top dead center. I don't think there's any arguing on the technicality of that.
