Default 4k gsk, 60lb springs and possiable timing. HELP!

I need help doing all this.. I've used the search button and have goten now where. I want to install my 4k gsk and springs today, but after reading a bit its not that much more to go ahead and bumb the timing while I'm there. I'm wanting to bump the timing to either 16 or 16 1/2 degrees. I have 370's on the way, so the timing would be the next step. Any direction to where I can find detailed instructions to this, or just how to do it would be greatly appreciated! maybe even a number to call someone on in case I have problems. . you can pm me that. I have general knowledge of the engine n have modded my afc using instructions off here so I think this is somthing I can manage. Thanks again!

I dont have the "proper" tools to do the timing, I thought there was another way to do it without any specialized tools. And that post about the springs isnt verry detailed, I dont even know where to start...

You need to have the proper tools. Accuracy is VERY important here.

Dont forget to fix your kdp if you havent already done so.

true, its also very important to clean the pump shaft well before you put the pump gear back on. other wise you will be retiming the truck again.

Thanks, that helps.

The kpd job would be done when I have the valve covers off?

With care, it is possible to time the Cummins without all the special tools, but you'll never really know exactly what you have unless you have the tools.

Just loosen the pump gear (CLEAN the shaft!) and spin the engine back the number of degrees you want to advance the timing (pointer on the harmonic balancer). For 16* that works out to 3/8". I did mine that way before I had the tools and it worked great. Now, with the tools, I can check it to be completely sure it is exactly where I want it.

You might want to time it to factory stock before you start the advance, just to make sure you know where you are in the process. There is a peg in the side of the timing pump that you can pull and insert slotted side in that will align with the arm inside the pump. When the peg fits over the arm timing is factory.

Here is an article:
