Default what is it

i have a question i need answered. what is the canister shaped object mounted to the firewall between the brake booster and driver side hood hinge on my 87 f-250 6.9l idi. it has a wire terminal in the top and metal pipe connections just like the fuel sending units in the fuel tanks and the fuel tank selector valve. the wire is still pluged up but there are no hoses connected to it. thanks in advance for any help.

I'm going to say it's the factory water/fuel separator. They usually get removed or bypassed as they are a popular place for air to get into the fuel system.
