His coolant was low and the smoke smells more like fumes than diesel.

twalk225,
First you said it smells like raw fuel out the exhaust.
If this only happens when the engine is cold it may indicate a sticking injector spool valve. Did you notice if the injectors buzz for thirty seconds after the engine is turned off? If they do he should first get an updated flash for the FICM. He will need to have at least a 48.2 or higher version diagnostic computer. If they don't buzz after shutdown he already has an updated flash.

Second you said it smells like fumes and the coolant was low????
Did you notice if coolant was getting blown out of the Degas bottle? This would indicate a blown head gasket, etc.

Need more info:
Has you friend been keeping up on oil changes and using good oil? Do you smell fuel in the oil?
Stock program or custom tunes?
When the engine is warmed up is it still smoking?
Has there been a loss in power after the engine is warmed up?

To little of info to diagnose. Then a conflict of the fumes and coolant level. You mak it sound like a blown head gasket, and then it could sound like the FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) both cause white smoke. and so does Oil burning in the turbo on the exhaust side. All three have different running characters.
