you can definatly get lower gears... Look for an ID tag on the hogs head and see if it tells you a gear ratio. Should be a metal tab held on by one of the bolts that holds the cover on.

You can also go to a dealer and have them run the VIN and it will print you off a build sheet that will tell what the truck was sold new with.

It all depends on what you want to do with the truck

Don't buy anything from the dealer that you don't absolutely have to, they charge way to much for mostly junk. Find out what you have and let us know that along with what you want the truck to do and this will be an easy question to answer.

My old '95 had the gear ratio, among other things, printed on a sticker on the under-side of the hood. FYI, the stock axle gear ratio for your truck from the factory was 3.55:1. 4.10's were a $50.00 option.

If you still have your stock tire size, 3.73's are a good middle of the road gearing if you tow occasionally but also use it as a daily driver. 4.10's work great for towing but will cut into your fuel mileage and limit your highway speed if you like to get somewhere in a hurry (you'll run out of engine RPM's).

I run a taller-than-stock tire (33") with my 4.10's. Works great for towing and doesn't hurt too bad on the highway... so long as I keep it under 70 (max speed limit in Ohio is 65). any faster and it really starts cutting into my fuel economy.

you might want to consider switchin to the 4.10's towing that kind of weight, you would have to switch out the ring and pinion. There is a way to get the best of both worlds and it's by installing an external overdrive behind the tranny. You could get the take-off power of the 4.10's and the highway capibility of the 3.55's, the downside to the overdrive unit is the price. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
