Hey guys I just drove my first 6.7 today and was fairly impressed (outside of needs more power and mileage). Currently I am a 2005 5.9 owner and have not had one problem at all it has been a great truck, problem is I need a bigger truck seeing as mine is a 3/4 ton and I just purchased a 42ft. 5th wheel toy hauler. The trailer is 13,800lbs. empty and will probably be 20K to 21K loaded. Has anyone had good experience with the 6.7 one ton hauling this kind of weight over distances or do I bite the bullet and go with a F450 for the carrying capacity? Any advice on good or bad experiences would be greatly appreciated.

 

my 08 is a beast...pulled hotshot with it for a year coast to coast...only prob was EGR went bad, under warranty, but i removed it after i found out what the prob was..more power, lower egt's...i had an 04.5 5.9 and traded it for ths 6.7...i miss the ol 5.9 tho..mainly cause it sounds alot better straitpiped..ha..i pulled 40' gooseneck dual wheel/tandem axle that was 9k empty...tipped scales in boise city oklahoma at a lil over 33k....i fo sho wouldnt go with a FORD!!!

The Cummins has a larger towing capacity, depending on the year of course, compared to Ford, but the Cummins is a towing engine through and through. But I see you want a one ton which leads me to say, go with the 6.7 and maybe get an older year or newer if you can afford it. The biggest downfall is the EGR and DPF on the 6.7. If you can afford it and can do without a warranty I would get rid of both EGR and DPF to increase efficiency and have a great towing machine. The Dodge will get better fuel milage too. Just some food for thought.

 

nice thing is, the egr is pretty simple to reinstall...2 clamps and 4 screws...but i was told, its at the dealers discretion, about the warranty and mods...my dealer dont mind..the service manager (dealership owners son) has a new cummins with some mods, and tried to sell me his programmer til he seen mine in the truck...dont let them b.s. you on that

 

If you complain about the mileage on the 6.7 what for the numbers on the 6.4, they are horrible. My parents have an f450 and it gets a wopping 7mpg hooked to a trailer or not. Get the 6.7, i lover the looks of the fords but cant afford to drive one.

 

Thanks to everyone for the imput Going tomorrow to order a 2010 3500 4x4 laramie which gives me a couple of weeks to get some hi-po parts ordered...... which reminds me do any of you have experience with an air ride 5th wheel hitch??

 

Thinking about getting a 2010 Crew Cab LWB 6spd with the potential of a new job and lots of high way miles.

Than again, the job may mean that I could be looking at more than 1 of these trucks for the others in the crew but maybe not.

Lots of money to part with and not overly impressed by what I have read with the mileage but then again, I'm not sold for sure.

Ideas?

 

Id find a good 06-07 Mega Cab 5.9

 

Don't mind the power of this unit but have gotten considerably better mileage out of my 03.. Stock this motor has more balanced power then the usual top end only rip of all Cummins. Big and small I have driven them.. And for the most part they are all the same.. Start on their knees but once you got their legs under them they are rockets up top. Rumor has it that they have been cracked and some may be manufacturing tuners for the new ones some time in the next year or so. As far as towing goes, I have put on about 20,000lbs. of trailer on it and it handled it well.
