Default any exterminators?

yesterday We started seeing a few black ants (maybe carpenter ants).

We have never had any ants in our house up until this point. I killed probably 12 yesterday and 6 this morning. Why are they just now coming in and is there anything I can do to get rid of them? this is a new house. 5-6 years old.

we get them from time to time at our place. i get this stuff made by ORTHO at home depot. little jug you pump up with it's own sprayer. i spray around my foundation both inside and out. they usually disappear within 2 days of me spraying and don't see them again.

well it's an unfinished basement. guess i should of clarified that. . it's probably overkill spraying inside the house too but i hate the lil f-ers!!!! somebody used to make these little bait traps that you can shove in corners or put on your counter. i've used them too. they seem to be hit and miss.

I use "Bug Stop" from Wal Mart. Its a half gallon for like 7 bucks. Comes with a sprayer hose and nozell. Safe to use indoors and it has the same active ingrediant that the exterminators use. Works well for up to 6 months. Just spray around the basebourds and inside cabinets too.
I use it mainly for Brown Recluse spiders which i have had alot of since first building my house out in the sticks...almost don't see any more of them bad boys...one here and there but mainly in the garage.
I also fog the atic every spring which is where they live before finding there way into the house.
