I have a 1948 Farmall M, and I have been trying to get everything to work again, and am having trouble with the starting system. I had the started checked at autozone, and they said it was good. I checked and cleaned all of the connections. It has a new starter button and I put a new battery in as well. This is still a 6 volt positve ground system. The tractor does run very good when pull started but it just won't start itself, not anything at all, acts like a completely dead battery. Any help would be appreciated.

 

I worked on a similar year model and make sure the battery is up to voltage also check conections at the switch.

 

It is a brand new battery, bought it today for a different tractor. We took the wires completely off and cleaned everything and put it all back together but it still acts likt it isn't getting any juice. Almost forgott, when trying it with everything back together, the wires from the battery got pretty hot?

The Starter checked good at the parts store? try tapping on the starter while someone pushes the switch.

Tapping on the starter didn't do anything, although we did find a bad fuse finally, but it still won't do anything.

 

I thought about it last night and did the parts store check the starter under 6v or 12v ? I would bypass the swich with some jumper cables and go direct to the starter from the Batt.

 

Ok did the solenoid on the starter engauge like its supposed to?Jump the solenoids terminals with an insulated screwdriver or pliers with tractor in neutral of course. Sounds to me like you have a coil going bad in your starters armature due to the fact that your wires were hot.I assume you had to hold the button for longer than 30 seconds at a shot.In rare cases a short or a grounding problem could be your problem.Sometimes not detectable by the bench test.Did they hook it up to a GROWLER to check for shorts?

 

I would say its the cables. Try replacing the all the cables, including the ground cable. I have had this same problem before.

 

We found part of the problem, pulled the starter off and took it apart, and pieces fell out. Have a rebuilt starter from a buddy on it now but it still won't go. Guess just one piece at a time.
