Default Where to start?

Hey there. I am new to this stuff, broke, but hooked. I have a 98 24v Cummins and would like suggestions on what to do first. I plan on gauges, intake, exhaust, programmer and fuel upgrades. I have heard about the lift pump problem, should I start there? I want to run stacks- is single 7" good or would dual 6" be better? Any more suggestions... Thanks.

for sure gauges first. or do like me and get a chip with a display monitor. I have the edge juice with attitude. I like it buts its the only one i have ever had so I dont know whats best. You really need a different fuel (lift) pump, the factory pump barely meets the needs of the truck stock, no less with a chip. The injector pump will go out if you dont have enough fuel pressure and there at least a 1000 bucks so get a fuel pump! I just got an airdog 150. Fass are good but more money and the airdog has a lifetime warranty so.... I Like it so far. i got a 5 spd but since you have an auto then you'll probably need to work on it. At least cut the muffler and caddy off if there not gone or get an exhausts if you got the money, which of course would be better. I dont like stacks buts thats your choice. seems like everybody and there brother has them, and it probably decreases the value of your truck. good luck!!!

start with an intake and exhaust.... probably wont feel any gains there, but it will help.. alot. then move up to a programer and upgrade to injectors.... then do the fuel system..... id run 7" duals if i were you.. no real gains after 5" but still, i like 'em!!! welcome!!!

Here's my 2 bits.

With an auto, just do it first. It's very easy to add power, but the biggest expense and last guys try to do is the auto.

Get it out of the way and you'll save thousands later.

I will agree with this and add that a properly built transmission will turn an otherwise stock truck into an entirely different ride...in a good way.

It's hard to explain, a cat's just gotta drive one to find out.

I'm too new to argue with anyone, but help me with the whole gauge thing. I know about the fuel pressure problems, but for a guy on a budget, wouldn't an Airdog or Fass make monitoring the fuel pressure less urgent? We know the lift pump is gonna go, so I'm thinking replace it now & hopefully save the VP44. I know gauges would be very beneficial, but I would think the fuel system should go first. Would appreciate your feedback.

I would say do the lift pump first. My truck had a new injection pump and the factory fix for the lift pump the week before I bought it, so I did gauges and injectors first, wasn't looking to get injectors but couldn't pass up the deal I got. When I finally did my gauges I wasn't carrying very good pressure. That's when I put the airdog on. I'd say spend a few hundred on the fuel system now, so you don't have to spend 1k+ on an injection pump later. I will warn you though, once you start adding power it becomes very addicting and you just want more!
