If your Ford 6.4 loses all power when towing especially up hills, and the dealer says they can't find anything wrong.
Demand they replace the frame mounted low pressure fuel pump, also known as the lift pump.
Mine only acted up after the reflash of the <acronym title="Power train Control Module">PCM</acronym> and only when the <acronym title="Power train Control Module">PCM</acronym> put the truck in Regen.
The techs think it was because it lowers the high pressure out of the injector pump during regen and if the lift pump is working but not up to snuff then you don't get enough fuel in regen.
Fixed my truck.
Now if the moron engineers hadn't built an engine to support the OPEC bastards it would be a great truck.

White smoke in cold ambients is normal and the amount will be increased during regeneration.

Powertrain power is limited to 325 horsepower (HP).

Engine responsiveness may be slightly different than normal operation.

During initiation of regeneration, exhaust smell may be noticed - especially on new vehicles.

Powertrain sound will be different including air induction noise (including flutter on deceleration or engine shut down), exhaust noise, and changes in engine radiated noise.

During regeneration, exhaust temperatures are elevated.

 

i have a 2008 F450 6.4 diesel. i changed the fuel filters today. The low pressure frame mounted pump runs, but no fuel. Ford dealer says it also has a pump in the tank. i went thru all the procedures to bleed the line, no fuel. does anyone know if there is a pump in the tank on the diesel, or is that for gas only? how do i check both pumps, without buying new ones?

There is no pump in the tank of a 6.4 diesel. Your Ford dealer employs idiots.

 

so, since i am not getting any fuel to the sharaider vave under the hood. would you think the frame rail pump is bad?

 

UPDATE, Replaced the lift pump (on the inside frame rail).
turned switch on 1 time and filled bowl on filter on top of engine.
then cranked right up.

 

Congrats. Now go to your dealership and tell them to get out of the business.

Solution is DPF Delete my friend, helps the truck out by running and lasting 150% longer than stock. Add intake, egr delete, and tuner to tune out the fault codes and youve got a great vehicle that will stomp most newer sports cars on the road. If you want to go the route of course.

 

could use a little help. New to the 6.4 motor. Drain water separator light came on. So we drained it. Then Water in fuel light plus the "wrench" has come on a few times and so we decided to pull the filters, pull the lift pump, open it up, clean it, change the sensor. After installing and turning on the key it would not fill the top filter bowl with fuel. It does come up very very slowly. Very very small bubbles when I cycle the key 7-8 times. We unplugged the fuel line after the pump, turned the key on and fuel comes out, slightly slower than I would have thought but I guess it's a low pressure pump (4-8psi?). I have not tested the pressure yet, but the flow does start and stop with the key switch. So I'm kinda assuming it's working. What's next to check? Plugged fuel line to the top of the motor?

Will th check lights reset once fixed or do I need to do that ? Sorry for my lack of knoweledge on the subject. I was always a 5.9 cummis 12 valve fan.
