I need some opinions about a couple of different trucks I am looking at.

One is a 1982 Chevy Heavy 1/2 4x4 with a 6.2L Diesel and the other is a 1994 Dodge 12 V Cummins 4x4. The Dodge has 347,000km (I am Canadian) and there is no mileage mention in the add for the Chevy.

Cummins all the way. And if the price is right, that milage isnt bad as long as the oil has been changed regularily.

 

x2 on the 12 v

 

Yeah, even if the 6.2 has 100,000km less on it than the cummins, I think the Cummins would still be a better deal. But as Dr. Evil said, make sure the maintenance has been good on it.

Chances are if it's made it past 300,000km and it runs really well then the truck has been very well looked after. Most vehicles I've seen don't make it very far past 200,000km without major problems if they've been neglected.

 

There really is no comparison. The Cummins will last longer, make more power and get better mileage than the 6.2. Both trucks rust just as easily and have similar disintegrating interiors. I guess the edge with the GM is parts availability from a huge aftermarket arena compared to the Dodge. However, for the engines themselves, you'll be miles ahead with the Cummins.

 

Thanks everyone!! A friend of mine had a Dodge diesel, not sure of the year, but last I heard he had over 600,000km on it.

2 more questions.

1. What is the difference between the 12V and the 24V?
2. I have seen Ford F-650 conversions in DuPont Registry and they are running Catepillar Diesels in them. Is it possible for Joe Blow to order one and put it in his/her truck?

cummins for sure the chevy can't hang

 

cummins would probably start easier in the cold weather too. I had a chevy with a 6.5 in it years ago til I bought a cummins and never looked back

 

Again with the cummins! You cant go wrong. I've never been a fan of any v8 diesel. The 6.2s especially... Major differences and easy to understand between the 12v and the 24v are the heads and pumps. They both have their ups and downs its just what you prefer. Easiest way to describe it, 12v cheap horsepower with the mechanical pump, 24v expensive chip but adjustment on the fly.
