The first diesel here is a 7.3 IDI F350. The second is a Mercedes 300D with the in-line 5 cylinder...nice engine, but getting more difficult to get parts for. Our plan was when the time came, scrap the car and pull the engine to put in a Jeep Cherokee. Having worked with the Mercedes 2.5 some now, it's the parts that get you.
To that end, what is the prospect of putting something like a D722 3 cyl Kubota in a Cherokee? I am assuming conversion parts like tranny adapter could be difficult. Any insight? Other engine suggestions appreciated. We are not locked into any particular engine...or for that matter just a Cherokee. We just want a bulletproof diesel setup that we can afford.

Yeah, we're even considering switching the rototillers to diesel. Just have to watch the torque...

 

Interesting setup! The D722 is reliable but underpowered for a Cherokee and would need heavy custom work. You might have better luck with a VW TDI or a 4BT—both are more swap-friendly with better parts support.
