Default Rear end change in a 1996 F350

I am wanting to change out the drum brake rear axle for a later model disc brake axle in my dual two wheel drive. Is this possible & if so, what am I looking at? I looked at kits, didn't like them. I pull upwards of 14,000lbs & would like better braking on the truck.

I would go look at the dually disc axles from 99+ E350/E450 vans (Dana 70 or 80)... or the 01-02 Dodge 3500 (Dana 80). Both keep your current 8x6.5" bolt pattern. Just a matter of relocating the spring perches and shock mounts.
