350 to 6.2 diesel swap
A buddy of mine has a '99 Suburban with a ton of miles on it. He just replaced the transmission and transfer case. Today the engine went. It's got around 350k on it. We can get our hands on a good running 6.2 diesel for next to nothing. My friend would prefer the mpgs from the diesel than the horsepower from the gas. I've heard of swapping a 6.2 for a 350 but, what about going the other way? The swap should be pretty straight forward I'm assuming. Add another battery, remove the fuel pump from the tank, add a button for the glow plugs and wire up the solenoid. What else must be done?
remove pump from tank and replace it with a piece of 3/8 metal brake line to the bottom of the tank. Remove the gas fuel filter and screw in its place a 1993 6.5 td lift pump (it should screw right in place of the fuel filter), install a ford starter solenoid for your glow plugs and run a switch for it, supply key'd power to the lift pump, injection pump, and the switch on the crossover, motor mounts should (should) bolt up, will have to have all of the diesel accessories and brackets, Will have to replace the brake booster for a hydroboost unit 'cause diesels dont make vacuum. I just replaced a 4.3 in my s10 with a 6.5 td 8-9 months ago and it was pretty easy. It's best to have a donor truck though.
get to swappin!
for the record, a 6.2 is inferior to a good running 5.7 in about every way besides fuel economy. So as long as he can accept spending this time and cash to make it noisier, smellier, slower, and harder to start in low temps he should be good to go.
