Default 99 Ranger swap questions

hey guys I'm new to this forum and i'm looking for some help in the right direction on an engine to choose. I have a 99 ranger 2wd auto with a blown motor. I've been reading through the threads on what engines have been dropped into the ranger but I can't decide which one would fit me best. I'm not looking for hp or mileage, just looking for something to hum around town in. Any suggestions would be great! thanks!

what sort of budget are your working? what sort of fab work are you willing/able to do?, do you want all the accessories??? The Kubota is great, and does what you say you want. But as with any non automotive engine, requires quite a bit of fab work for accessories, and then the trans adapter. If you can live with no power steering or aircon then the Kubota might be a good choice for you.
if making accessory drives is not your thing, you might want to look at a dressed auto engine, think VW, or JDM diesel. If you are on a tight budget, you might be able to squeeze a MB eng in there, or eng and trans. though they are not that cheap anymore.
depending on cost, and your location, I would seriously look at a jdm engine and trans combo, heck if you look you might be able to find a bolt in JDM for the Mazda truck

thanks for the input guys. I'm on a $4k budget really. I'm just looking for a cool little cruiser. I've been working with cummins for a while now and wanted to get into building a little rig. I don't have much metal fab skills but I do have a few good friends that offered to be apart of the build so I'm in luck!

I found myself looking into the vw 1.6td engine with a toyota 22R behind it. I think it would be a good setup for my needs. I will look into JDM diesels before I pull the trigger. Thanks again for the input!
