Default Diesel Newbie

Hey
I am restoring a 1956 Studebaker 3/4 2WD pickup. Looking at replacing the V8 with a diesel but I'd like to keep the New Process 540 5 speed transmission. The short block Stude weighs about 780 lbs, so I don't think I can add much weight up front. So, does anyone know a good diesel candidate that will mate fairly easy to this transmission?
Thanks!

The easiest engine to swap in is a mechanically injected 4bt cummins. They make plenty of adapter plate and housings for many different transmissions. And there is very few wires. Welcome to the diesel world

I agree with the 4bt idea. You should also be able to get good mileage out of it as well.
