So I'm new to the whole diesel thing. I am looking at purchasing my first diesel truck. I've had my eyes on either an 03 or 04 Common Rail. What are some things I should look for when test driving trucks, and what should scare me away?

do some reading ALOT in this forum! #1 is Blowby That is cylinder pressure going past the rings. Test by unscrewing oil cap and placing on hole loose! If it blows off walk away! Also white smoke on start up. Cold engine.

 

Thank you very much! I'll have to check for blowby when i get to see it next time. My only scare is its been at the dealership for over 100 days according to CarGurus. Im wondering if its still there for a reason.
