Question thermostat temps 180 or 190 degrees

getting ready to service my cooling system(2000 Ram 2500 5.9L 24v w/224,000 mi.'s) ,will flush & replace all hoses & water pump/leaking from weep-hole + new etholyne-glychol antifreeze. stock OEM calls for a 190 degree thermostat, is that for emission purposes? why not use a 180 degree? I plan on pulling a 11,000lb. trailer in the future, which would you use $ why. thanks for any input.

Hi there, I just wanted to share a recent experience i had with changing my thermostat in a 2006 dodge 5.9 diesel… my temp was running a little above the center mark so i thought i would try a new thermostt..i went to the local auro parts asked for one.. they sold me one.. i installed it, and the tempature was all over the place. 180----210.. while driving. come to find out although what they sold me fit… I needed the thermostat made by cummins. as they do not operate the same.. there is a center hole inside the thermostat housing that the thermostat sets in . the bottom part of the cummins thermostat sets in the recessed hole in the housing, while the after market thermostat does not have the extended bottom to set in the recessed hole. went to cummins and bought the right part ( $30.00).. and temp is rock solid where it should be. an after market and cummins thermostat are built differently.
