Default 7.3 fuel bowl wire connection...what's it for???

Hey guys, on a 2000 powerstroke 7.3t...can anyone tell me what the electrical connection directly next to the fuel drain valve on the fuel canister....I bought the truck used and the plug is off the fitting, I plugged it back on and drove it for a minute, when I stopped and opened the hood , the plug was smoking and when I went to disconnect it from the fuel bowl it was scorching hot, obviously a short somewhere but does anyone know whet that electronic connection does????
