Default 5.9 shutting down

I have a 06 5.9 cummins short bed crew cab with 48re tranny. The truck has no power adders and has 240xxx miles. The issue is when I accelerate and down shift to pass, the trucks RPMs pick up..puffs out a small amount of black smoke...like usual..but lately it goes into like a limp mode and shuts down Then a matter of 3-5 seconds the throttle will pick back up and resume Any ideas?

also the truck will do it accelerating up a hill from the start and I'm not running it extremely hard to "roll coal". I'm afraid I'll have this issue pulling my 36' car trailer. Any more info needed...just ask!! Thanks to all that can help!!

What's the voltage like on your voltmeter? Have you noticed any fluctuations? Hooked up any new lights or anything? My truck completely shut down on me driving down the road due to low voltage/bad connection. Should read about 14 volts or slightly over 1/2 way on gauge

Volt meter only fluctuates when the intake heater operates and no new lights or connections of any sort. All new batteries 8 month ago also. The truck acts like it hitting a limit...similar to like a speed sensor wen you hit a certain milage. But it's only wen I give it more throttle than usual casual driving. Like passing or pulling out and accelerating quickly

Sounds like your PRV is bad. As long as you don't full throttle you should be ok till you replace it.
