crank no start i'm lost
I have a 1997 f350 4x4 7.3 auto trans. cranks nice and strong but wont fire checked all the fuses no issues there. when I turn the key on however the CEL comes on for about 1/2 second then turns off. don't know if maybe its a computer issue or not. not sure of the history of the truck either. can anyone point me in the right direction?

that's what i was getting at on the fuel pump.the motor does have an injector pump
unless there are aliens carrying the fuel to the cylinder
.

we are talking about the old style 7.3 right.the injector pump sets in the valley
and the pump is a burr to get to.i know if the fuel pump quits they will use what ever fuel they have in the lines and then die.but you are sayinging they will literally run with out the pump im confused here.what about the ipr thst regulates the hpo or do these motors not have these.i know the 99s do but i just seen this was 97.

First I agree with joebob3039. Is there any codes? Next, wouldn't it be a good idea to see if the fuel bowl has fuel in it? If it is dry, then fuel delivery to the bowl has stopped somewhere I believe. Assuming this is yes, is there anything coming out of the exhaust at all? White smoke, fuel smell, etc.?
Fuel is delivered to the pump and then pushed into the fuel bowl. It is then sent through the HPOP to the two rails that run into your head covers and feeds the injectors with high pressure diesel. If this is all going well, then the fuel injectors are not triggering / opening and or the fuel is to cold to fire (hence the need for glow plugs).
If fuel is getting to the cylinder and not firing, you will know it. Usually lots of white smoke.
