1998 6.5l reliable or money pit?
Hey all,
I have been searching for another diesel truck for a while now, and I have come across a 1998 6.5 chevy k2500 with 114k miles, the guy is asking $8995, which IMO is a little steep. I asked a buddy of mine who is a diesel mechanic and he told me that the '98 6.5s are a bad year. Is this true of all of these trucks, and am I going to be paying more money to fix it than what the truck is worth, or will it be a good reliable truck that I can drive daily???

There were a run of weaker engine blocks IIRC started in 97?
The trucks are real reliable if you use them as intended.
They are a light duty diesel and were built for economy-not power-they have no place being compared to a 7.3,cummins or duramax or used as such.
They will tow within reason and get you where you are going just slower on average.
The PMD with resistor installed,properly mounted on a remote heatsink with extension harness mounted outside the engine compartment aids their lifespan and a spare known good PMD combo should be carried at all times for emergencies when the PMD fails.
It's not a matter if if the PMD will fail but when?
EGT and boost gauges should be installed to keep it in the safe working range and help with future diagnosis.
Parts are cheap compared to newer vehicles and once you learn about their short comings they are not that hard to diagnose.
AC Delco ONLY for electronic parts.
Transmissions are nearly bullet proof and electronically shifted.
I would say that the price is quite steep?
