6.5l Tranny issue - Sun gear box?
My overdrive on my diesel Suburban 2500 is out and reverse takes its time to kick in. I was told by a friend of mine that the Sun gear (box) needs to be replaced in the tranny. I was wondering if that sounds correct? If it is, where abouts in or on the tranny is this gear located. Can it be replaced without completely disassembling the tranny? I hear it is on the top of the tranny, but my source is not to reliable.
Again, if it is the sun gear box, what is a good source to buy one. And how complex is it to install it?
Thanks bombers!

i dont want to sound mean but your friend is an idiot.......sorry.......there are alot of people out there that claim to be "mechanics" but have no mechanical knowledge and they are the ones that cost people money, ALOT of money......
now, you have a GM 4L80E automatic transmission, very common tranny and a rebuild isnt too horrrible, i would recommend having a competent shop rebuild it, and when you do it have a light performance rebuild done on it, it will give you firmer better shifts and also look at installing a tranny cooler or a new cooler if you already have one......

Logan, The 4l60's and 4l80's did have a problem with a sun gear, but it wouldnt be an overdrive issue, it would be reverse and 1st? If i remember right. oh and no park normally!
It's a pretty big issue, That sun gear is at the very back of the transmission so a whole rebuild is pretty much needed to get the chunks out
Its actully very simple if you have all the tools! But as logan said.. Your friend is a dummy, If the sun gear was toasted you would know it!
