Hello,

I want to change my front and rear diffs to Amsoil. I haven't ever done it myself before; but I called a shop and they wanted $200 for front and rear. ($20/quart plus their labor)

He said they have a machine to suck out the old oil so I won't have any leaks. But, won't that potentially leave debris inside the diffs?

What is involved, what do I need and how hard is it, how long will it take me? And most importantly, can I mess it up?

I know I can get the Amsoil alot cheaper directly myself.

Tell them they are on crack. Buy the oil, remove your drain plugs and fill bolt, fill back up to just below the fill bolt level and your done.

 

I don't have to take the differential covers off?

 

On most of them, no. Some of them you do.

 

Our Dodges don't have drain plugs, unless you have an aftermarket cover.
It really isn't hard. Chad had a write up about it on here. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Your instructions may not work for me. What if I only have a 6 foot 27 year old no-good son in law and not a 4 foot 4 year old to crawl under my truck?

 

Sounds like you can cut his legs off and it should work out for you

 

I am getting conflicting info on whether or not I will need a new gasket or the use of gasket goop.

Are my gaskets for my front and rear diffs re-usable?
