Really going to depend on how much you are willing to spend on it and if made in the USA is important to you. Colt should be at the top of the list simply because they hold their value better if you ever was to sell it. I personally am willing to pay a more for made in the USA so here is a list of 1911's made in the USA in the order I would choose: Wilson Combat (if I could afford one), Les Baer (if I could afford one), Colt, Sig Sauer (German co I know but all their 1911s are made here), Para, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Remington, Kimber
Foreign made 1911's: Springfield (some are made here but most are made in Brazil), Taurus, Armscor, Rock Island, American Tactical

Far from a complete list but maybe it will help you out.

Hey it was late and I don't have any first hand experience with those. However if I had to choose one and was planning on carrying it everyday and didn't care if it got dinged up I would pick a sig. Cheaper than a colt but with better quality in my opinion.

i'm new here, but im a gun dealer so for whatever it is worth.
i just bought my wife a sig c3 really nice gun great fit and finish
but for me, my carry is a rock island with 3 inch barrel. i know what your thinking....
i bought it at dealer pricing for 3hundred something, i fitted the beaver tail, saftey extended mag release etc... change a few springs etc, im under 500 dollars and i guarantee it shoots just as well at 25 yards as my kimber undercover. another great quality gun that often gets dumped on is taurus. they aint the piece of crap they use to be.
the way i look at it.. i carry what i dont mind being taken away from me in the case i need to use it. my cheapo 1911 will kill some one and be confiscated just as easy as my STI. plus i love going to the range and out shooting guys who spent way to much on a gun.. just my .02

I know what you're saying, I have a CZ-75 for self-defense & a GLOCK 19 in the trunk of my ATV, cause if those guns get there finish marred, it won't bother me

I second Taurus. I have a PT24/7 Taurus that I carry everyday and it has had thousands of rounds through it and never failed me. Its not the 1911 but I am just saying for quality Taurus is been good.

That is the first time I've seen quality and taurus in the same sentance (the car or the gun).
