Default What Motor Should I Buy

I am in school right now to become a diesel tech and for one of my classes i need to rebuild a diesel motor. I would like to buy an old truck and rebuild the motor so i have a decent truck at the end of it. I dont have a lot of money to spend so i was wondering what would be a good motor to rebuild that wouldnt be a ton of money. I am looking at old 7.3, 6.2, or 6.5.

why not do something useful or at least cool do a 5.9 or a 3.9 cummins or a 2 cycle detroit

the 7.3 idi is best used as a boat anchor the turbo ones are some better but still a v8 how many over the road trucks use v8's not many you get more torque from an inline as a Diesel tech student you know this

6.2 gm this motor in some 1/2 2wd drive pickups got great mileage but no power and don't try to turn it up unless you to make a trip to the junkyard

6.5 the bottom ends were weak and they liked to eat turbo's and not user friendly to work on I replaced 3 of them on an employers truck before I quit so I didn't have to replace the 4 th

there are some isuzu diesels inline one that would be cool to do also

do a real diesel a truck or industrial engine not a pickup engine the only engine that is put into a pickup that is a real truck engine is the 5.9 they were used in ford straight truck and single axle semis and tons of industrial applications from farm tractors to combines to drilling machines the list goes on for ever

last bit of advice do something you will enjoy doing and that is cool to do
