Default 2002 duramax fuel gauge

The fuel gauge on my duramax is out and shops want about 800 to fix. Anyone know if there's a quick fix for this or if it's really the part in thank that needs replaced?

Sometimes the needle shows full but most of the time it's on empty.

do you have a DIC instrument cluster with steering wheel controls? the easy test is to compare the fuel gauge reading to the digital "miles to empty" number. if the gauge shows empty but the truck reads out that you have 200 miles of fuel left then you have a stepper motor failure. every silverado, tahoe and yukon in this body style generation that i've had needed one or more stepper motor replaced in the cluster.

I don't have the DIC. Would the needle still go up sometimes if it needed replaced?

if the stepper motor is bad- it will do whatever it wants. can't recall if the low fuel idiot light is triggered with the gauge or with the signal from the sending unit.

I think there's something up with the gauge in my '01 2500. When going down from full, once it reaches a half a tank it's like you can watch the needle drop. And when filling it up the needle pegs out a bit past the F for full and the truck still takes another 5-6 gallons, sometimes more.

Any suggestions?
