99 6.5 exhaust

if i make a homemade exhaust just by strait piping through the muffler not the cat will it hurt the fuel economy?

I deleted the muffler on a 1993 and gained1.5 to 2 mpg easy and seemed to have a little more power and it wasnt all that loud either
