Default Raptor fuel pump Q's

I believe my original LP is getting tired. Even if it's not, I want to change it for piece of mind- I'd rather do it before it may be necessary than be proven right when it fails at the worst possible time. I'm sure another stock one would be fine for my needs, but I don't want to put the same thing back in. Just because.

First question: which one? I've read up quite a bit here on options, and it seems like most of the discussions surround the Raptor 150, Airdog 150 and and Airdog 165. I think any of them would be a substantial overkill for my goals. I don't care about the extra filtration, ease of installation and price are more important. Power wise, my plans are for a 4K GSK, maybe a plate (probably #10?), boost elbow in the 35psi range and bumped timing, someday. As such, from what I gather a Raptor 100 will have no trouble keeping up, but nobody ever talks about that one here. Why? is it a bad choice for some reason? I'm looking at this one. Not necessarily there, I'm sure I'll ask in the Armory, but that's the pump I think I want.

Next: it's possible (probable?) that what I think is a tired LP could be the OFV. I know nothing about this other than that it could be a problem, and I read a lot about people changing them, getting adjustable ones, etc. Where is the OFV located? Will this pump negate the need for it, or will it still need changing if it's bad? Is it something I should upgrade at the same time as the pump, or will it be eliminated entirely?

Any input/experience is appreciated. I know the Raptor/Airdog topics have been done to death, but not on this pump unless I just didn't look in the right places. I think it's the one I want, but in case you can't tell, I don't really know jack about jill with this. Thanks for reading.

Hm... looks like 47 other people are just as curious about this as I am.

If you want piece of mind, put a stocker back in. Its mechanical... good for 400 hp ish.

I run a Raptor 100. check my sig. I'll be throwing .024 DVs in too. I figure I'm still good so it should be plenty of pump for you. Install was pretty easy.

Change the OFV first cuz its way cheaper than a pump. A fuel pressure guage is a great way to trouble shoot.

What would my gauge be showing me if it's the LP vs. the OFV? Basically what I'm getting on my gauge right now is: about 15-18psi at idle, 20-25 cruising, 25-30 at WOT. Sometimes it'll even go up over 30, but not by much. To me, this sounds pretty healthy, BUT. I change my fuel filter every 5000 miles, with the oil change, tire rotation, etc. That's what it shows on the gauge with a new filter. As the miles rack up, it drops. By the time I'm due for service again, it's down under 10psi at idle, and I'm lucky to get anywhere near 20 at any throttle position. 98% of the time I'm running fuel from our pump station at work, it's a three year old tank and we go through several thousand gallons a week so it's always fresh. There are multiple filters on the pump station as well. I know it isn't our fuel crapping up my filters prematurely. This is why I was suspecting the pump. I want to start turning the fuel up, which means asking more of my pump than it's already giving, which depending on how new my fuel filter is may just be asking it for too much. I travel way too far from home almost daily to be worrying about my LP.

I just meant that a guage will tell you if a OFV improved the pressure. Then its on to other things.

I think you have healthy pressure for a stock pump. If it drops and goes back up when you change the filter then it has to be the fuel source. OR you got something else in the tank.

I think there is a screen in the fuel heater thingy. My Raptor bypasses this.

The raptor 100 is adjustable and very easy to install. Its enough for my fueling so far and hasn't had any problems.

I've gone 30 000 miles before my filter starts to affect pressure.

We have a fleet of 40-some odd trucks using this pump station, and mine is the only one with any issues. If it was the fuel, I'd think the filter would look a lot worse when I change it. I've cleaned the heater screen a few times, there's never been more then a few grains of sediment in there. I assumed that the pump just didn't have the ***** to keep the pressure up as the filter became soiled, which with the miles on it and the life expectancy I've come to hear about, seemed as likely as anything.

So, I'd lose the fuel heater with the Raptor, or that's just how you plumbed yours in? Is the OFV part of the LP? Because if I'd hate to replace something that would end up being eliminated if I end up putting the Raptor in anyway.

The fuel heater is kinda tied into the stock lift pump. I followed the instructions and they bypassed the heater/lift pump. I'm kinda happy with this as they can sometimes leak and let air in.

You can remove the pump and pull the actuator rod rendering the pump useless and it will mount back on just to plug the hole in the block or you can order a big block chevy fuel pump block off plate for a cleaner look. I just remounted my stock pump.

Hm. Not sure I want to lose the fuel heater. Then again, not sure how much good it does either. It can get pretty cold here...

Decided to order the Tork Tek adjustable OFV and see what happens. What can it hurt, right?
