About 20 years ago I had a cracked head on my 1982 6.2L diesel. The Chev dealer replaced the head and, if I recall correctly, said that the early 6.2L's had a coolant flow passage design problem that allowed an air bubble to collect in the back of the head, causing localized overheating. They said that when they replaced the head that they installed a retrofit flow deflector that would keep the air flushed out and prevent the head from cracking again. I'm getting the heads redone again and can't remember the specifics of this. Have any of you heard of this, or is it just my senile brain just not remembering right??

I think the answer you are looking for has more to do with a restrictor in the water pump bypass hose.
