quicker and easier, and also commonly done is using the out line to the cooler. use a proper tee fiiting and you will get instant results. measuring the temp of the oil thats actually doing the work

you can try using am infrared temperature gun and shoot it at both lines, whichever line is hotter is the one carrying fluid to the cooler. the cooler one would be the return

 

Isn't there a test plug on the side of the trans that the sensor will screw into?
