ok i got a bet going on
i work with a know it all, and its getting a bit annoying. anyways we were talking about my E99 truck, and he thinks that the turbo back exhaust (4" downpipe, 4" straightpipe to 5" stacks) and diy intake (full 4" mandrel bent tubing and donaldson filter) should add about 60 hp and 120 torque. i think he is not only wrong but a complete moron. i was thinking more along the lines of 25-35hp and 50-75 torque.. am i right or is he or are we both way off?
any help is appreciated. |
My guess is less than both of you figure...
A chip will get you roughly 60-80hp... Exhaust and intake are just supporting mods and might bring a little but not much... |
really? no real power gains huh? I'm not trying to be a dick, i'm trying to figure this out correctly. Removing all air and exhaust restrictions wont gain anything?
I know this is not the same but i gained 23 rwhp on my former Chrysler 300c with the 5.7Hemi with an Airhammer Intake, and a full 3" headers back exhaust (yes it was dyno'd before and after). So on a diesel allowing it to breath won't gain me at least that? :humm: *EDIT* I forgot to mention it was running Diablosport Predator tunes before and after the mods and yes a TS chip is coming for it... I understand I will reap more of a benefit then... |

You will gain some power with those mods. Your numbers are more realistic.

If you saw 20 I would be surprised, think of it this way, how much more power do you notice when you change a dirty air filter, not alot, going to an easier breathing filter only gains you a little and the exhaust is the same, I would say 10 from both.
|
maybe 15-20 hp? not a huge gain, you'll see alot more if you don't have it, chip it, then do it, thats when you can tell the biggest change that i've noticed
|
wow that is actually kinda depressing lol
|
ok another stupid question that goes along with that. i am thinking of buying a ts chip and was looking at these setting:
High Idle 1200 rpm smoke 65hp moderate tow 65hp daily 80hp performance 100hp performance how close to these numbers will I actually achieve? |
~80hp give or take...
Some get more, Depends on who is doing the tuning... |
i was looking at tunes from KT Performance
|
intake and exhaust are more supporting mods like someone said. I wouldn't be surprised if you told me you put them on and lost power on the dyno just as much as you gained only a little.
As far as your mods to your 300C, unless you did back to back dyno runs right after the install, on the same day, I don't believe that either. Especially without adding a tune to it for the intake/exhaust. I watched a low 500rwhp duramax dyno one day. Did 3 pulls, shut truck off, put a well known intake on the truck, re-ran the dyno right then (truck never came off the dyno) and the numbers were exactly the same. Not a single change. You'd think a truck making over 500 at the wheels would be choking for air on the stock setup eh? |
if you read my edit, i was running custom diablosport predator tunes, not just the canned crom files, thats probably why i gained as much as i did, and yes it was dyno'd same day same location before and after

Ahh didn't see it, with the mods AND the programmer, I could see that. That's key, tuning the vehicle to match the mods. |
