manual trans or auto????
so the transmission went out of my truck monday and I've been thinking about putting a manual trans, so should i put a auto back in the truck or a manual? i found a guy ta put a manual trans, clutch, drive shafts, transfer case, comp, and whole clutch set up for 2,200 so is it worth it?
|
That's half what it will cost for a BTS...
My .02 is to get the built auto and be done... No hack job tranny swappin. |
have you seen any of the guy's work?
|
Auto does everything better... There is no up side to a row boat...
|
psh. oh no you didnt. OH NO YOU DIDN'T!!! lol manual transmission is the best thing since sliced bread
|
yes he owns his own shop, if it can be done with a ford diesel hes done it, powersmoker if you fork over the other half id happily get the BTS but until then im on a low budget, considering the motor just blew in the ol ladys blazer:dang: so auto is always better???
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- and prison i know i love manuals but itd cost me 3000 ta have my auto built pretty good, this is the first auto ive owned besides my very first truck when i was 14 lol |
no way. stock for stock manual trans. built auto might be great from what i hear. i still prefer manual transmission.
|
i can have mine built pretty good for 2800, but i like manuals, but im needing a trans ta last me for awhile and i mean a long while lol
|
well what are ya gonna do with it?
|
what do you do with truck? Auto is faster and easier on leg, manual pulles much better and works in the mountains better. If you live in flat country auto is better, just dont try pulling 20k trailer with auto in the hills.
|
pull gravity wagons, haul mud trucks, goose necks with trucks, daily driver,
|
There is a reason Ford no longer offers a manual transmission... No need. You can make an auto hold anything you want to do with the truck whether its pulling, racing, or daily driving. If you're set on having a manual again, go for it... but again, you can't beat a built auto period...

I guarantee I will out pull, out tow and out work any row boat out there, point and shoot with an auto, no thinking about it... Dont mind the music..... LOL That was pulling about 18k for a GVW of about 26k... |
here's what i got from that.....A)you have a crack in your windshield. it's all i looked at the first time i saw the video lol and B) Nice music haha NOT!!! and ya what about it lol the manual has more control all the time. no tunes for shifting just me shifting how I want to shift it. that's what i like about it. and it's another argument why nobody can drive my truck

I can shift my truck to any gear I want, and hold it as long as I want... An Auto tranny is just plain better, it will pull better, hold up to consistant Hp then a manual will... Not to say there are not some weak areas in a stock auto, but there are the same weaknesses in a stock manual... |
what weaknesses? i put my manual through a thing or two and had no problem. give me these weaknesses and the day i start my truck back up i'll see if i can find them lol
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- but seriously get new music :bat: |
Put a temp gauge in your manual...:scare2:
Weak slave cylinders, weak clutchs... As was said before, there is a reason why more and more OVR trucks are going to a auto set up, why more and more manufactures are not offering a manual... |
i have had no problem with slave or clutch and as for the temp guage whats your point? unlike my camaro my truck uses 30w not atf. my transmission can take whatever i throw at it. lets call this a draw at personal preference lol
|
The new trucks are going to manual trannys because 1 they are easier on drivetrain 2 smog! But i dont know one guy pulling lots of weight in the mountains im not talking some of those ant hills, that will steep up and say auto is better unless you like to replace brakes every 10k. and how many people do you know that put auto in and in a year it is bad or it dooes not work from start.
|
Well I think I'm stuck rebuilding my auto pretty good, nobody around here has a 6speed :( I'd prefer ta get the good ole manual but no luck
|
here was my take on the whole thing i love manual transmission just because i gt bored in the truck and it keeps me active and my wife can drive manual better in the mud prevents you from over speeding your tires
i chose to rebuild the auto cuz BTS rebuild 4200 dollars 1000hp ready maunal transmission probably from junk yard 1500 plus the 2600 that ford house wanted to install it so you tell me which is better? oh and another question very out of place in the ford section but can you sled pull with auto cuz i hear alot of ppl sayin that they pull in 4 low in 3rd or 4th |

wat gear you pull in joe?
|
Low range and 2nd... Depending on the track I will shift to 3rd...
That was YEARS ago... Stage 1's and a 38r. Drove all night to get there, hooked and then slept in the truck...LOL |
From my understanding the cabs are different between the autos and the manuals as the manual requires more room in the trans tunnel??? Or is that wrong? Comparing my friends auto truck to my 6spd, I have two bulges on either side of my tunnel that are not present on his.
Also, with my parents 6spd they lost the slave cylinder at about 160k miles on the odometer. I was borrowing it after that and the throw-out bearing froze and eat up the input shaft, which ended up with a trans replacement (rebuild with a new input shaft was also an option). |

So you could easily put an auto in a manual cab super duty, but placing a manual into an auto cab super duty would require tunnel work.
|
ive been told an manual will slide right in, just have ta replace pcm, both driveshafts, transfercase,

You have to change the tunnel. The manual will not fit, unless you do a body lift. |

well da** it it i guess i was miss lead, AGAIN, thanks CSIPSD for correcting me AGAIN LOL
|
a question for you guys...... im having mine rebuilt, and i was told to install an external tranny cooler, and i was looking at putting an extra 3 quart tranny pan on it, which one or both should i do???
|
Definitely do the external tranny cooler... Tru Cool has a nice unit.
From what I have read, the deep pan doesn't really do a whole lot except add more fluid to try to keep cool. So I would just do the tranny cooler. |
i was looking at putting the cooler in front of radiator and adding an external filter, close to the cooler??
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- how big of a cooler should i go with??? |
Either the Tru Cool 47391 or a 6.0 tranny cooler is what I would do. :c:
|
i was told a b&m cooler with a fan and thermostat would be bout 140, is this accurate? and are they good stuff, i cant seem to find em on the net for my truck
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- and wouldnt i need one with the external thermal bypass since my winters are COLD!!! |
if u dont completely abuse a manual it will last the life of the truck, seen it done several times. ya an automatic is better for racing and its easier to drive. in a manual the clutch is designed to wear out, and even if u dont completely destroy an automatic transmission its still very expensive to have one rebuilt when it wears out, even at factory specs. some of the heaviest clutches you can buy are still only a fraction of the cost of a built automatic, and much cheaper and easier to work on
|
Good-Fast-cheap pick any TWO
